  1. I really enjoyed "Our Deal." I liked that it was shot as a music video, with very few spoken lines. Because of the few spoken lines, emotion relied so much more on the actual acting, rather than the presentation of the lines. I liked the talent they cast. However, a couple of weeks ago I was introduced to "Community," and every time I saw Donald Glover, I couldn't help but see Troy Barnes, the character he plays in "Community," but that had nothing to do with the presentation of this short. That's my problem.

If I were to describe this short with a color, it would be a depressing grey. There was no lack of color in "Our Deal," but the miscommunication between Veronica and Lucky left me wishing that a lot of things had happened differently.

  2. I think this video looks very good visually. She did a great job with the lighting by showing the happy scenes in bright, vivid light and the dark, fighting scenes in dark lighting.
The shots are visually interesting as well. The environment of the composition works well in the video.
Overall I think Barrymore portrays the story of this video very well.

  3. I enjoyed "Our Deal" more than any other short film we've watched for this class. Drew Barrymore did a great job telling the story and conveying so much emotion with only five lines of dialogue. The actors deserve some of the credit also - particularly the lead actress, Chloe Moretz. They did a great job of conveying emotion and giving the scenes meaning through actions and facial expressions. I also enjoyed the use of graffiti - on walls and hands - to move the story along. I felt it went well with the "gang" related storyline.

I also thought the camera shots were varied and intriguing. Some of the most interesting shots were from the rooftop scenes. I thought the deep depth of field and lighting led to visually interesting shots, without being distracting. The most effective scene of the film, to me, was the final scene - the camera slowly pulling out to reveal Lucky's entire message, and then Veronica's reaction. I thought it was a moving, well shot scene.

Overall, I found "Our Deal" to be entertaining and provocative.

  4. Out of all of the short films we were assigned, this is probably the one I was most excited about, due to it being Drew Barrymore, and I was not disappointed. For some reason the location in the beginning of the film gave me a Grease feeling, where Danny is racing a car. I also loved the text they used in the video to show the cast.

The colors went along very well with the scenes. The scenes that were happy had very bright and sunny colors, while the dark scenes had very dark lighting and color. It did a good job with setting up the scene.

I also enjoyed the cast. I thought Chloe Moretz did an excellent job, and I think she did an excellent job as the "modern day Juliet." Throughout the video I kept getting the feeling of a modern day Romeo & Juliet.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I thought Drew did a great job as a director, and I really enjoyed the story.

  5. It was well put together and flowed well. I also liked how it was told using music and little dialog. I loved how graffiti was used to show dialog and emotion. The location seemed to fit the theme of the characters. Low in society and dirty. I liked the use of color throughout the whole thing as well.
Overall it was a well put together piece and was a lot of fun to watch.

  6. Both visually striking and emotionally appealing, "Our Deal" is a prime example of how continuity in film is essential for story-telling. Without the need for dialogue, the music video delivers a clear narrative along with a well-rounded message dealing with love between two opposing lifestyles ("Day" and "Night"). Although a handful of times the video capitalizes on the characters using written conversation, the main source of communication for the audience is through the song's lyrics (when presented), as well as the continuities within lighting, blocking, and camera angles. The mood is shown through the specific use of each, and it ultimately sets the overall dark tone of the film. With "Our Deal," the mood tends to shift back and forth - from joy to dreariness - so often, that until the very end, the audience is unsure whether to feel optimistic or just ominous.

As a whole, "Our Deal," is a great story about love. What makes it great, however, is showing the audience how unpredictable and powerful love tends to be, along with how quickly it can empower those involved. This is shown with a "forbidden love" emerging between two characters with opposing lifestyles ("Day" and "Night") which ultimately leads to the death of "Day". Drew Barrymore does a great job holding onto the suspense throughout the film's final moments and eventually leaves us feeling somber alongside "Night."

  7. I enjoyed the short film "Our Deal". It was more of an indie music video take on West Side Story, and I found that to be very unique. The locations where the film was shot really helped the film out a lot. The huge sewage pipeline type area in the middle of a city was really cool and really worked for the whole gang scene.

One aspect to the movie I liked was how there wasn't that much dialogue and in some of the scenes, the songs told the stories instead of the characters speaking. The scene where the boy and the girl are on top of the roof at sunset with the skyline of the city in the background was a very well shot scene. IThe song in the background was saying how the girl wanted him to be her boyfriend and that along with the scene definitely worked.

The overall story with the conflict and the romance between the boy and the girl was entertaining and the filmmaking was very professional. The one thing I disagree with was the writing for the part where he spray painted "I Cant" on the wall and that led to "wait to spend my life with you". I understand that it was a twist and a very intricate part to the story, but someone wouldn't make a huge mistake like that. Why didn't he just write the whole thing out on one side of the wall? That would have been the logical decision for him to make. It seemed too easy for the plot, almost as though the writers got lazy and thought that would work. Besides me being nit-picky, it was a very well-done film.

  8. I did not like this short film. I am so sick of all these teen romance films coming out. This film reminds me of those crappy Twilight movies. This is just Drew Barrymore retelling the same old teen love story that's been done over and over again. The only nice thing I can say about this film is that it has some visually interesting shots. The shot that showed Drew Barrymore shooting dice on the sidewalk was probably the best part of the film.

  9. It’s a classic story, Veronica the ‘night creeper’ falls for the not so lucky Lucky, the ‘day trotter’. Being essentially a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, there’s nothing very special about the story itself, but it’s well acted and the cinematography sets the mood nicely. Some of the crucial plot points don’t make much sense, but being a music video I imagine most won't notice or won't mind.

The one thing that stands out to me about this short is the narrative economy. Quite a bit of story, enough to fill a much longer film, is told in a relatively short period of time. A good example of how to tell a story visually.

  10. I really like this music video. I love how they based the story on a classic musical. West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals and stories. I was very impressed with the video; especially with it being "low-budget." I was impressed with all of the different shot compositions and angles throughout. Different shots made certain scenes feel more important and put emphasis in the right places. I thought it was creative and intelligent how after the boy spray painted the wall, the audience was left hanging. We weren't sure exactly what he wrote on the rest of the wall. I also like that they put a little twist on the original story.

  11. I really, really enjoyed this video. I've actually seen it before, only what I saw was a condensed version of it. Anyway, I love music videos that actually tell a story, so this "supervideo" entertained me. It's clearly based on West Side Story (so we all knew what was going to happen...), but they still managed to add an element of surprise to the ending (when Veronica finally saw that Lucky wrote "I can't wait to spend my life with you", not "I can't"). There was a variety of shots within the video as well, making the overall product visually engaging. I think Drew Barrymore was also smart about her casting; she chose popular young actors, who are actually talented. Chloe Moretz did a great job as the lead, Veronica. I'm not a fan of MTV's Teen Wolf, but I think Tyler Posey did a decent job in this video, as did the rest of the cast.
This is one of my favorite music videos, so I hope the concept of supervideos continues.

  12. I really enjoyed the lighting they used in this film, particularly in the scene leading up to the fight. I thought it was cool how they put the Night Creepers at the far end of the tunnel with the light behind them, creating a silhouette, and showed the Day Trotters entering another tunnel at the near end with the light coming from behind the camera so we could see them. I thought that was a very neat contrast in shots that were used one right after the other. Also, I think the music in that scene fit well too.

In the final scene, I liked how they used camera movement to reveal the last part of the message he wrote for her by moving around the corner of the wall. Like we talked about in class, that camera movement had a purpose. It was a neat way to let the audience read the entire message. I thought they did a good job in telling an old story in a somewhat new, somewhat different way.

  13. When I saw Best Coast and Drew Barrymore put in the same sentence, I expected this video to be great. I saw commercials advertising this video awhile ago and planned on seeing it just because of all the familiar faces such as Tyler Posey from Teen Wolf, Miranda Cosgrove from iCarly, and Chloƫ Grace Moretz from Kick-Ass, and others. The main thing that bugged me were how none of the actors could seem to act through not talking. The end was just too corney for me and I can not even believe Barrymore would do Best Coast like this. This is the main reason why I do not like watching music videos when I know they could have portrayed the message of the song better. Also, Barrymore used Best Coast's best songs and this was such a disappointment!!! :( I wonder what Best Coast thinks about this. Having to watch this was extremely difficult for me, almost like watching a movie where everything goes wrong and the ending doest not end happily.

What was up with the fighting scene..........? I thought they were fighting and then it looked as if they were dancing but then back to fighting? I know these actors are not professionals but even little things like this can play a big part in telling a story that was 99% non-verbal.
I guess the lighting was okay but when a story and song are supposed to go together and the actors portray it horribly the shots will not be remembered as much. I believe everything should check and balance each other out. Again, it was just so sad hearing many of Best Coast's songs and seeing this sadly, put-together music video.

  14. The short "Our Deal" is very good retold a very familiar tale of the star-crossed lovers that everybody knows through the medium of music. The way the film starts off is good in the sense that the film had to establish the rivalry of the two gangs. The way the dialogue is shown through the main characters is a cool way to show the sweet and innocence of the relationship by just writing on stuff.

The way the film was shot is interesting by the way it is shot like a music video to tell the story through music. I think the best shot of the film is the final shot of her staring at the wall at his final message to her was a very powerful message.

  15. "Our Deal" was a really wonderful video. Even though there was almost no dialogue at all, it still managed to tell an engaging story. The contrast between the two opposing groups was very well done in a creative way with their different clothing colors and styles. The acting was highly dramatized, but it was clearly done that way on purpose to tell the story solely with their exaggerated reactions.
One of my favorite things about this short was that the camera was almost always in motion. And not only was the camera in constant motion, but it was always smooth panning, tilting, and zooming so as not to make the viewer motion-sick with camera shake. Also, It was all done with clear direction and purpose. The camera never stopped, but it also never wandered around aimlessly.

  16. My first thoughts on this were wondering if this was some bizarre, modern, much more intense version of Grease. It was kind of strange, fun to watch, fun to look at, and was engaging. My only beef with it is the plot has been used. A lot. It's a typical Romeo and Juliet affair where if the couple just hadn't been fatally idiotic, things would have turned out ok. It's all about communication folks. If you can't already tell, Romeo and Juliet plots do nothing more than frustrate me. If only the foolish boy had been more careful about his graffiti word placement, and the foolish, fabulously dressed girl had thought to wonder what he was doing on the other side of the wall. Ah, but we can't have common sense here! This is a tragedy! In any event...

Yes, this was a well done film. It would have impressed me a lot more if it was done by someone lesser known and lacking in big budget company support. Drew Barrymore had a lot of advantages here, with indie star actors and her already-achieved fame. It was pretty creative how she never had the lovers actually speak to one another, again there literally seems to be no communication here. Actually, the film's lack of dialogue is one of it's charms, up until the victims sister decides to speak to incite her fellow Night Creepers to fight. Not sure why that time was chosen to have someone speak, that message could have been conveyed easily without speaking, and in my opinion would have added more intensity to the situation. Again it was visually pleasing and interesting, but probably could have been a lot more.

  17. It is a kinda of Romeo and Juliet story. The first conflict is in the a girl fight with another crew. Another girl left and then meet a guy. These two people fall in love.
I pretty like the second part. Because of the girl's careless and scary about the fight, also the limitation of the wall. So she misunderstand the guy's meaning. It is a very good turning point for the story. After the last scene, we saw the truth. Everything makes sense at that time. Additional, i like the last shoot when the girl was crying and saw the other part of the message. It shows how dramatically the story goes.
The music for this short movie is not bad. I do not really like the first part's song and the fight's song. They do not show how sweet their first meet and how intense is the battle. But I do like the last song. It sounds a happy song but actually shows the worst thing happened for the girl. The contrast is really shock for audience like me.

  18. The Our Deal video was a pleasant surprise. For one, it was packed with a lot of familiar faces which sparked my interest. Then I realized it was based on West Side Story, so it did become a little predictable. I thought the song and the music video went together really well. I also love the use of natural light, especially when the two lovers were on top of the building. I also love the aspect of the limited dialogue. The story was very easy to follow, so I even think the video could have gone without the dialogue. The only thing I didn't like were the transition title cards (That Night) (Later that Day etc.).... but other than that l enjoyed it!

  19. "Our Deal" was an enjoyable short although the style was different from the other shorts we have seen so far. This one relied heavily on actions as there was very little dialogue between the characters. I like the idea of a Romeo and Juliet mixed with a West Side Story story line. I think its also worth mentioning that this film has the audience paying attention in different ways.
First, because you can't rely on hearing characters speak to understand the plot due to little speaking, the viewer really has to pay attention and see whats going on. Secondly, you have to tune in to who exactly is who (Day Trodders and Night Creepers) by paying attention to their costumes especially. They never verbally distinguish between who is on whose side. And third, the audience has to listen to the song playing through the film. "You'll never tell me how you feel. You'll never tell me, 'cause thats our deal" is the main line in the song, giving the short its title. The lyrics are indicating to the audience that these two people who are in love but from separate gangs aren't able to express themselves freely out of fear of what might happen to them.
I think it was visually pleasing and kept the audiences attention throughout the whole short.

  20. I thought this music video was great in the fact that it captured my emotions to the fullest extent. it capsured romeo and juliets vibe and even some Greece parts involved. i didnt understand however why they made the only part where someone talks as the part when the woman says "they cant do this to my sister". Probably because it was a very important part and it was the climax, but i still think that many other parts would have been great with commentary as well. Overall though i think that the music fit the video well and added a sad/dramatic feel to it as you were watching it. I liked it overall though because it involved all emotions; joy, love, hate, fear, and sadness. i thought it was great!

  21. The short film "Our Deal" reminds me of Romeo and Juliet. The gang that Lucky is associated with essentially is at war with the two wolf gang. The two main charters seem to be in a love hate relationship.
The camera angles and the music essentially create the short. The few dialog clips in the short are only there to point out the prelude to the war scene. The war scene seemed to be the highlight and closing point of the clip. When the lead guy, Lucky is killed, I was expecting the lead girl to commit suicide to coincide with the juliet scenario.
The whole short is really sad, and is probably true for real life gang.
